30g tuwar dal

30g moong dal

30g urad dal

30g chana dal

900ml cold water  

Mix all the dal together and allow them to soak overnight or for at least 2 hours in coldwater.



350g chicken breasts cut into 2 inch strips

1 medium onion, peeled and finely chopped

1 medium tomato cut into thin slices

3 green chillies, seeded and finely chopped

4 tbsp of oil

4 cloves

1 tsp salt

½ tsp turmeric

2 tsp lemon juice

½ tsp cumin powder

3 cloves garlic peeled and finely chopped

½ inch cube of ginger peeled and finely chopped

1 tsp sugar

800ml cold water


Dhansak Chicken

Drain all water from the dal and mix it into a large saucepan with the chicken. Pour water in and bring it to the boil.

Turn the heat to medium low and simmer for about 30 minutes or until the dal turns into a sauce.

Roast the cloves in some oil in another saucepan.

When done add the onions and fry them for about a minute.

Now add the rest of the spices and stir thoroughly.

Once mixed add this mixture to the dal and chicken and stir again.

Cook on a very low heat for about 10 minutes and add sliced tomato
